Thailand & Laos - December 2017

Luang Prabang

On 21st December we flew to Laos to our favourite city, the UNESCO world-heritage town of Luang Prabang.

We love this historical city resting between the Nam Khan (Khan River) and the Nam Kong (konwn to us as the Mekong). The historic town is situated on a peninsula and is surrounded by rivers and beautiful countryside. From the centre of town, several bamboo footbridges will take you across the Nam Khan and you can wander into the peaceful countryside and local hamlets.

The centre of town is lined with lovely boutique shops, restaurants and small hotels, colonial houses, temples and monks together with local markets and food markets. You can spend a few hours leisurely walking around enjoying the day in Luang Prabang. Find yourself a local restaurant by the riverside for a leisurely lunch with a Beer Lao looking out over one of the rivers. In the afternoon, walk it off with a climb up Phou Si hill. (several hundred steps) to the temple at the summit with commanding views out over the city, the rivers and the countryside beyond.

We stayed at the boutique riverside Burasari Heritage Hotel, across a quiet road from the Nam Khan. We use this lovely hotel for our tours. The small boutique hotel is several traditional style houses with Lao and French influences. Our room on the first floor had a roofed terrace with table and chairs looking over to the river on the other side of the road. Downstairs rooms have terrace seating by the gardens. The hotel also has a terrace bar and restaurant on the other side of road right next to the river.

Many of our clients have been to Laos with us before and I can still recommend a few days in Luang Prabang to enjoy its beauty and relaxing atmosphere. We can offer two new day tours. The first is a visit to a village across the river to visit the temple and chat to the monks, learning about their way of life. Secondly we can also offer a day trip to visit the village of the Hmong minority people. If you have not been to Laos we offer a numbers of tours in Laos on our website.

We left Luang Prabang to Veng Vieng on Christmas Eve.
